Program Introduction

Program Leader: Dr. Lindy Davidson

Immerse yourself in the field of public health and gain hands-on clinical experience while enjoying the tropical scenery and warm community of Sosúa through the Honors Dominican Republic Beyond the Classroom program.

Dominican Republic Beyond the Classroom starts with a fall 2025 geographical perspectives Honors course, during which ܽƵapps will explore the connection between health and culture in the Dominican Republic. This includes taking a close look at the social determinants of health, common health concerns of the region, and how they intersect with the rich histories and diverse cultures that shape everyday life in the Dominican Republic.

At the end of the semester, ܽƵapps will travel to Sosúa, Puerto Plata on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, where they will spend ten days exploring these intersections through cultural immersion and hands-on involvement. From sharing meals with host families to volunteering in mobile clinics, ܽƵapps will finish their semester of learning with an unforgettable experience abroad!

This program provides a culminating international experience for Honors ܽƵapps interested in the intersections of culture, social sciences, and health, as well as ܽƵapps looking to practice or enhance their Spanish language skills. Course application is open to ܽƵapps of all levels and majors.

Note: Dominican Republic Beyond the Classroom will only be offered in fall 2025 for the 2025-26 academic year. Apply as soon as possible to take advantage of this opportunity.

While in-country, ܽƵapps will support the staff of the Kerolle Initiative for Community Health in important efforts such as mobile medical clinics in medically underserved areas, sustainable gardening projects to increase food security, and wellness educational programs for the communities. Additionally, ܽƵapps will receive lectures about global health from Dr. Reginald Kerolle, founder of the Kerolle Initiative, shadow physicians during the mobile clinics, and gain insights into the Spanish and Haitian Creole languages.

The Kerolle Initiative is a nonprofit community health organization based in the Dominican Republic dedicated to providing holistic health interventions to improve quality of life and access to medical care in rural communities.

Students will stay together in host family homes, allowing them to personally connect with members of the host community. All meals are provided by a trained chef, who can accommodate dietary needs while sharing the true flavors of the Dominican Republic through traditional dishes. Students will have daily access to basic WiFi. Host family homes do not have air conditioning or hot water, and rolling power outages can occur.

What The Dominican Republic Beyond the Classroom Alumni Have to Say

Since 2016, over 200 Honors ܽƵapps have participated in the formative program, which can leave a lasting impact on ܽƵapps, many of whom are aspiring health care professionals:

“I got to take that step forward and see what it was like to be in the shoes of a physician and it made me realize that it's exactly what I wanted, exactly the path that I want to take.” – Nusheen Immen

“The Honors College did a great job of preparing us both culturally and in the language sense. Our host families could not have been more welcoming and warm. We were clearly in a very different environment, which was challenging for many of us. However, the host families, the kids, and the people in the community made it feel like home.” – Aakash Vijeesh
