The ’s (COPH) hosted its 7th Annual Activist Lab Boot Camp, focusing on the theme, “Creating a Healthier and Safer Workforce: Be Voices for Change!” The two-day event, held in collaboration with the (SERC), explored occupational safety, health and wellbeing while equipping attendees with advocacy strategies to drive meaningful change.
According to , Distinguished ܽƵapp Health Professor and director of the Activist Lab, this year’s discussions highlighted the evolving landscape of workforce health. Key takeaways included the historical context of occupational health, the need for continued focus on workforce issues related to women, youth, migration and human trafficking, and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of work.
“The key is how AI can augment what we do rather than replace us,” Liller said.
SERC played a pivotal role, with its faculty and leadership providing historical insights and expert analysis on current trends. ’s keynote address traced the evolution in the field of occupational safety, health and wellness, while s presentation on regenerative leadership underscored the importance of innovative leadership in public health. The panel discussions led by SERC program directors and community representatives offered attendees practical knowledge on emerging occupational health challenges.
Several influential voices contributed to the event’s impact. U.S. Representative Kathy Castor delivered a powerful address on federal efforts to enhance workforce safety and the ongoing need for evidence-based advocacy. , dean of the COPH, emphasized the role of public health in advancing worker protections. Breakout sessions encouraged participants to develop position papers on critical workforce issues, with a strong focus on legislative amendments and policy revisions.
The Activist Lab also honored Ellen Kent, a longtime advocate and former leader of the , with the 6th Sam Bell and Betty Castor Advocacy Champion Award for her dedication to community engagement and public health initiatives.
Looking ahead, the Activist Lab plans to build on this year’s discussions, with immigration and environmental health emerging as potential themes for future events.
“We are already excited about planning Boot Camp #8 for 2026,” Liller said.
